Huaca de la Luna

This monumental structure lies on the western flanks of Cerro Blanco, facing the Huaca del Sol. It measures some 290 meters north-south and 210 meters east-west.

The Huaca is composed of an enormous platform on the southwestern corner of the complex built of solid adobe (platform I); a smaller platform on the southeastern corner of the complex (platform II); and a third and higher platform, larger than the second one but not as large as the first one, on the northeastern corner (platform III).

These three platforms, which dominate the complex, are connected to four plazas located at various levels. These include a large plaza measuring 180 meters in length and 100 meters in width located on the northern side of platform I (plaza 1) where the main access to the Huaca was probably located; a second, smaller plaza (plaza 2) 3.5 meters higher than plaza 1 which was connected to platform I as well as to plaza 1; a third plaza situated between platforms I and II (plaza 3), which features a rock outcrop that clearly had a ceremonial function; and, finally, plaza 4, located at the foot of platform III.

The platforms as well as the plazas were defined with very high and thick adobe walls. Notable among these walls is the perimeter wall which closed off the southern side of the complex, forming a 180 meter long, 18 meter wide corridor that projected to the east, reaching the base of Cerro Blanco.
